FROM MANDALAY TO BAGAN
Bagan named UNESCO World Heritage Site
Bagan has been named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, a quarter of a century after the ancient capital was first nominated.
The proposal to list Bagan was approved at a meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Saturday. This marks Myanmar’s second entry to the list. The first award was in 2014, when the cultural body inscribed the Pyu Ancient Cities – Hanlin, Beikthano and Sri Ksetra.
The heritage area is already one of Myanmar's most popular tourist destinations. The move will potentially revive the country's lacklustre travel and hospitality industry since 2017. Tourist numbers, particularly from European countries, have fallen, as a result of the northern Rakhine crisis and bad tourism policies.
Bagan was one of 36 nominations under consideration to be inscribed in the World Heritage List, and the final decision on the nomination was carried out by the 21 members of the World Heritage Committee.

The Hsinbyume Pagoda stands out with its white paint in Mingun, Myanmar. The pagoda's design is a great departure from Burmese pagoda design norms. It is based on descriptions of the mythical Sulamani pagoda on Mount Meru, and the lower parts of the pagoda represent the mountain. Seven concentric terraces represent the seven mountain ranges going up to the Mount Meru according to Buddhist mythology. #photography #hsinbyumepagoda #mingun #myanmar ALL CRD ALEX BARANDA PHOTO
